The Glory of Vocal Chords

There are a couple of girls in school a grade below me who I really only met last Purim, when I was dressed up as the Angel of the Night. They started calling me all kinds of different angel stuff, like the Devil, and I didn't like it, so they finally came up with the Angel of Death: they lead people to the Next World. So I said okay, and now they always call me that. It's fun! So anyhow, the last day of finals I was in the library with a few friends with my notes open but not really studying, and we all started singing. It was mostly pop and alternative - my friend snuck in some Jewish songs from choir - and when we stopped to talk, those two girls kept telling us - me - to keep singing, because I had such a good voice. Just kept saying that, every time we stopped to talk or study. I'm really getting more confident at this!
Too bad it comes from other people's approval.

I'm afraid we have to face the possibility that we will never attain this mythic ideal state of not depending on the validation of others in order to feel good. And why is this such a bad thing? How else are we to gauge our accomplishments if not through the reflective eyes of others? We are too close to appreciate ourselves all of the time. I'm not saying it should all depend on others, but you shouldn't feel guilty when other people m,ake you feel good about yourself. Angel of Death huh? What an honour. Join the club - apparently I'm satan...

Is it an Ungar thing that we can't in anyway satisfy ourselves? We can't get any validation from ourselves? Yes, we all need others to recognise our accomplishments but entirely?
